The update package is optional, however your site is at risk of breaking or becoming outdated. While you could install updates on your own, it is not recommended without adequate WordPress training. Sometimes the upgrades don’t go as planned and you’ll then have to figure out on your own how to get your site back the way it was. Of course, we can’t guarantee against all risks.
